2025年6月10日、鉄道ファンにとって胸躍るビッグニュースが飛び込んできました。JR東日本が、E657系特急型車両(あだ名：ムコナ)を改造した新たな夜行特急列車を2027年春に導入することを発表しました。

かつての「ブルートレイン」を彷彿とさせながらも、全席グリーン車個室という現代的な快適性を備えたこの列車は、移動そのものを楽しむ新たな旅のスタイルを提案します。今回は、発表された概要とともに、なぜ今E657系が改造されるのか、そしてどの編成がその栄誉を担うのか、ファンの間で広がる憶測にも迫ります。

·         プレミアムグリーン個室（1人用/2人用）: 広々としたL字型ソファを配し、フルフラットのベッドスタイルにもなる贅沢な空間。

·         グリーン個室（1人用/2人用/4人用）: 簡単な操作でフルフラットにできる機能的な空間。1人用から、家族や友人で利用できる4人用まで用意されます。特に4人用は常時フルフラットで、小さなお子様連れにも安心です。

·         ラウンジ/販売スペース: 乗客なら誰でも利用できるオープンスペースも設置され、旅の仲間との語らいの場も提供されます。

なぜ今、E657系が改造されるのか？ ～ダイヤ改正が生んだ「余裕」～

常磐線特急「ひたち」「ときわ」で活躍するE657系は、全19編成（K1～K19編成）が勝田車両センターに所属しています。今回の改造の背景には、近年のダイヤ改正によって生まれた編成の「余裕」があります。

2023年のダイヤ改正でまず1編成分の余剰が生まれ、さらに2025年3月のダイヤ改正で「ひたち」「ときわ」の定期運用数は13となりました。突発的な事態に備える予備編成を多めに見積もっても2～3編成あれば十分で、15～16編成で運用が回せる計算になります。

つまり、全19編成のうち数編成は定期運用から外れる余裕があるのです。東北新幹線が不通になった際の代替輸送（臨時快速列車）なども考慮した上での判断と見られ、今回の夜行特急への改造は、この余剰編成を有効活用する絶好の機会と言えるでしょう。

改造されるのはどの編成？ ファンの間で噂される「K11編成」の動向

E657系1編成が夜行特急に改造されるというニュースを受け、鉄道ファンの間では「どの編成が選ばれるのか？」という議論で早速盛り上がりを見せています。その中で、最有力候補として名前が挙がっているのが「K11編成」です。

JR East to introduce a new night express in the spring of 2027! The E657 series will be reborn as a green car with all private rooms

On June 10, 2025, there was some exciting news for railfans. JR East Japan has announced that it will introduce a new night limited express train in the spring of 2027, which is a modified version of the E657 series limited express train.

Reminiscent of the old "Blue Train" but with the modern comfort of a private green car with all seats, this train proposes a new style of travel that enjoys the journey itself. In this article, we take a look at the outline that has been announced, as well as the speculation that is spreading among fans about why the E657 series is being remodeled now and which formation will bear the honor.

Overview of the new night express train

The key points of the announcement are as follows.

·         Service start date: Spring 2027 (planned)

·         Service area:  Scheduled to be in the Tokyo metropolitan area ~ North Tohoku area (subject to change depending on the season)

·         Vehicles used: 1 E657 series limited express train (10 cars) remodeled

·         Seating and Capacity: All seats are reserved seats (private room type) in the green car, and the capacity is about 120 people. Multiple types of private rooms are available for 1~4 people.

Highlight (1): Exterior that inherits the memory of the Blue Train

The design of the train consists of two colors: the bright blue "Memorial Blue" that inherits the memory of the night train, and the dark blue "Midnight Horizon" that symbolizes the dawn. The "blue moment" of these two blues raises the anticipation for a new trip.

Highlight point (2): A private and high-quality space called "private room for all seats"

The concept of the interior is "a simple yet high-quality moving space". All seats are private room types that ensure privacy.

·         Premium Green Private Room (1/2 Persons):  A luxurious space with a spacious L-shaped sofa that can also be used as a fully flat bed style.

·         Green Private Room (1 person, 2 people, 4 people): A functional space that can be fully flattened with simple operation. It is available for 1 person and 4 people for family and friends. In particular, the 4-person compartment is always fully flat, making it safe for small children.

·         Lounge/Sales Space: There will also be an open space for all passengers, providing a place to chat with fellow travelers.

Why is the E657 series being modified now? ~The "margin" created by the revision of the timetable~

A total of 19 trains (K1~K19) of the E657 series, which are active on the Joban Line Limited Express "Hitachi" and "Tokiwa", belong to the Katsuta Rolling Stock Center. The background to this reshuffle is the "margin" in the formation created by the recent revision of the timetable.

The 2023 timetable revision will first create a surplus for one train, and the March 2025 timetable revision will bring the number of "Hitachi" and "Tokiwa" to 13 regular operations. Even if you estimate the number of reserve formations to prepare for unexpected situations, 2 ~ 3 formations are sufficient, and it is calculated that 15 ~ 16 formations can be operated.

In other words, a few of the 19 trains can afford to be out of regular operation. The decision seems to have been made after taking into account alternative transportation (temporary rapid trains) in the event that the Tohoku Shinkansen is suspended, and this conversion to a night limited express can be said to be a great opportunity to make effective use of this surplus train.

Which formations will be modified? The trend of "K11 formation" rumored among fans

In response to the news that one train of the E657 series will be converted into a night limited express, railway fans are immediately excited about the debate of "which train will be chosen?"

Among them, the "K11 formation" is named as the most likely candidate.

The K11 formation had been out of service for a long time due to an unfortunate accident. At one time, there were whispers that the car would be scrapped, but it is said that it has been repaired and is expected to be restored. However, as mentioned above, there are already enough formations for normal operation, so there is a widespread view that the returned K11 formations will not be left redundant as they are, but will be given a new role.
