JP-8タンク貨車は、在日米軍や航空自衛隊が使用する航空燃料 JP-8（ジェット燃料の国際規格 F-34） を輸送するための専用タンク車である。外観は一般的なタキ車に似ているものの、米軍・自衛隊の燃料規格に対応した設備や安全基準が求められるため、国内石油会社のタンク車とは運用体系が異なる。

これらのタンク車が 「米タン」 と呼ばれるのは、
“米軍向けタンク車” → “米軍タンク車” → “米タン”
という鉄道ファンの略称が定着したためだ。正式名称ではないが、趣味界隈では広く通用している。

実際の運用では、横田基地・岩国基地などの米軍施設だけでなく、航空自衛隊の基地へ向かう輸送も行われる。とはいえ、運行の中心に米軍向け輸送があることから、通称として「米タン」が使われ続けている。

What is the "JP-8 Bei-Tan"?

The JP-8 tank cars are specialized freight wagons used to transport aviation fuel (JP-8, international standard F-34) for the U.S. Forces Japan and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF). While they look similar to standard Taki fuel tankers, they adhere to specific safety standards and operational systems required for military-grade fuel.

In the Japanese railfan community, these are widely known as "Bei-Tan." The nickname is a shorthand for:

U.S. Military ("Beigun") + Tank Car ("Tanku-sha") → Bei-Tan.

While they serve various facilities like Yokota Air Base, Iwakuni Base, and several JASDF bases, the term "Bei-Tan" remains the most popular way to describe these unique operations.
