Ride Report: Into the 160 km/h High-Speed
Section Beyond Inba-Nihon-Idai!
After departing Keisei Ueno Station in Tokyo,
Skyliner No. 143 travels out of central Tokyo and continues onto the Hokusō
Line and the Narita Sky Access Line toward Chiba Prefecture.
The main highlight is the high-speed section beyond
Inba-Nihon-Idai Station in Chiba Prefecture, where trains reach a maximum
speed of 160 km/h. Keisei Electric Railway is especially notable for using standard
gauge (1,435 mm). Legally, this is a conventional railway rather than a
Shinkansen line, but its standard-gauge track and 160 km/h operation make the
Skyliner feel like a “Little Shinkansen.”
Once the train reaches 160 km/h, the increase
in lateral movement is clearly noticeable. Even so, although the motion is
strong, it never feels unpleasant, and the train maintains a reassuringly
comfortable ride.
The AE Series is equipped with bolsterless
bogies (SS170M/SS170T), full-active suspension on the end cars, and yaw
dampers, all designed to reduce movement and improve ride comfort. These
technologies may be what allow the train to remain comfortable even when the
motion becomes more pronounced.
Arrival at Narita Airport: The Immense
Airbus A380 and Unusual Platform Barriers
Before long, we arrived at the terminal,
Narita Airport Station in Chiba Prefecture. After getting off the train, I
spent some time exploring the airport.
From the observation deck, I spotted an Airbus
A380, the enormous double-deck passenger aircraft. Its scale was
overwhelming: the other aircraft parked nearby looked almost like small planes
by comparison. On my way back, I also stopped at JR East’s Narita Airport Station in Chiba
Prefecture and noticed its rope-type platform barriers. This unusual system
raises and lowers a set of ropes, and because it is still rarely seen at
stations in the Greater Tokyo area, it immediately caught my attention.
What began as a spontaneous Skyliner ride
turned into a thoroughly satisfying railway journey, combining the thrill of
160 km/h running with plenty to see and explore at Narita Airport.
You can also enjoy the beautiful excitation tones of the Toyo Denki IGBT-VVVF inverter and the train’s running sounds in the video, so please follow the YouTube link and have a listen!
We have also released the audio recording of the 160 km/h high-speed section between Shin-Kamagaya and Airport Terminal 2 (Narita Airport Terminals 2 & 3) in Chiba Prefecture, Kanto region, Japan! Please check it out and enjoy listening!
